Growing your own weed in Michigan won’t send you to jail, as long as you are an approved medical marijuana user. The only real challenge is finding high quality marijuana seeds. You may find some clones in a dispensary, but your choices will be slim.  Instead of searching for a place that will sell you seeds, choose exactly what you want by buying marijuana seeds online.

Michigan laws

Michigan weed laws
Michigan is a state with very strict marijuana laws, if you are not using it medicinally. Possessing or using any amount of marijuana can cause jail time and growing small amounts of marijuana is a felony with up to four years in jail.  With the exception of Ann Arbor, which for some strange reason is decriminalized, marijuana- especially growing it- is still considered a serious crime. The only way to legally grow marijuana in Michigan is as a medical marijuana patient.

Medical Marijuana

Michigan has a well-established medical marijuana program that covers a variety of conditions. It has had the program since 2008, and it includes reciprocity with other medical marijuana states that honor reciprocity. This means if you are a registered medical marijuana user in one state and decide to visit Michigan, you are allowed to continue using marijuana in there. This is, of course, only if the original state offers the same program.

The Michigan medical marijuana program covers Alzheimer’s disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, cachexia or wasting syndrome, cancer, chronic pain, Crohn’s disease, glaucoma, HIV or AIDS, hepatitis c, nail patella, nausea, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), seizures and severe and persistent muscle spasms. Patients can have up to two and one-half ounces of marijuana at a time. Register as a patients at marijuanadoctors.com, it’s very easy.

Medical marijuana patients are allowed to grow up to 12 plants as long as they are enclosed, or completely private from the public eye. For patients who prefer, caregivers can also grow marijuana in Michigan. A caregiver needs to be at least 21 years old and not been committed a felony. Caregivers can grow for up to five patients.

In order to grow marijuana in Michigan, you need to first register with the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs. You will need to also have a doctor certify your health condition. More information about this process can be found on the LARA website.

Before you grow marijuana in Michigan, take some time to learn how to grow the best marijuana from an expert. I have written a guide, The Marijuana Grow Bible as a free resource for anyone who wants to learn how to grow marijuana with high yields. When you combine this with high-quality seeds and nutrients, you are sure to end up with the best medicinal marijuana you can find in this state.

It’s not a good idea to grow marijuana in Michigan without a medical license, but should you decide to do so there is one silver lining. They have a conditional release program that lets some first-time offenders receive probation instead of jail time. It’s not a guarantee, but it is better than the mandatory minimums some states have. Growing less than twenty marijuana plants is a felony with a maximum of four years in jail. So, generally speaking, it’s a better idea to simply get a license as a patient or caregiver. Even if you only get probation, at least then you won’t have to worry about spending time in court.
